What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a permanent replacement option for people missing any number of teeth. There are three pieces of a dental implant: the titanium implant screw, an abutment or connector, and the dental restoration, which can be a crown, bridge, or denture.
The Benefits Of Dental Implants
We recommend dental implants for patients in need of tooth replacement due to the numerous advantages they offer compared to other restoration options. Their benefits surpass those of alternative treatments, making them a superior choice. Dental implants:
- Look and feel like natural teeth
- Can replace as few or as many missing teeth as needed
- Help prevent bone loss and maintain facial structure
- Restore the ability to eat, speak, and smile with ease
- Can be cared for just like natural teeth – with good brushing and flossing techniques at home
The Dental Implant Procedure
Having a dental implant placed is a multi-appointment process.
- We begin with a consultation. During this appointment, we’ll do a quick exam, take images of your mouth, and discuss your treatment recommendation.
- When you come in for your next appointment, we surgically place the implant post into your gums.
- After a couple of months, the implant will fuse with your jaw bone, giving us a secure base for your restoration.
- Finally, we place the abutment (the connector) and fit your restoration – a crown, bridge, or denture.
Types Of Dental Implants
There are a number of different dental implant types, and the treatment you receive is always based on your specific needs.
- Single-tooth dental implants, as the name suggests, replace a single tooth using a single implant topped with a dental crown.
- An implant-supported bridge can replace any number of teeth in a row with the use of implants on either side of the gap and a prosthesis attached to bridge the gap created by the missing teeth.
- We can also use implant-supported dentures to replace multiple missing teeth in a single arch using strategically placed implants and a denture that securely clicks into place on top of those implants.
When you visit us for a consultation, we will go over your options and help you decide which implant type is right for your smile.
What To Expect During Dental Implant Recovery
Recovering from having dental implants placed usually takes a couple of weeks. During the first 24 to 48 hours, you may experience some swelling, so we recommend icing the area and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. You will need to eat soft foods only for the first couple of days post-procedure. After about three days, you can start to incorporate firmer foods into your diet. Brush and floss your teeth as you normally would, but avoid the implant site for about a week.
A couple of weeks after your implants are placed, you will come back into the office for a follow-up. Our team will examine the site to make sure that it is healing properly. At this point, you can begin brushing the implant site gently.
We will have to wait, on average, four to six months while the implant fuses with your jaw bone. Once the implant has fused, we can top the implant with the appropriate restoration, which can be a crown, bridge, or denture depending on your needs.
